Knürr CoolFlex - Energy efficiency means increased RoI
Knürr AG shows how to do it with CoolFlex

Arnstorf [April 10, 2008] – Green IT is more than a fast-moving IT and TC trend. And this is precisely the point that
Knürr AG Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Peter Koch, focuses on, and using corresponding research and hands-on
results, demonstrates that data centers can already be operated today in an ecologically responsible way with financial
savings of up to 90%. “According to current estimates we can assume that a standard server will soon consume the
equivalent of its purchase price in electricity – in just one year,” says Dr. Koch, and explains the actual challenge for IT
managers and ultimately the company with the following example: “Until recently specialists were still calculating on the
basis of approx. 700-900 watts per square meter. Today the standard is 1,000-1,200 watts per square meter. With the
use of blade server technologies, however, some 4,000-8,000 watts per square meter is also already required.” So what does a modern, environmentally-friendly but financially sound solution look like?

Revolutionary concept – and more than just cold aisle containment
Knürr has further developed a simple technical application into a ground-breaking solution that quickly resolves the problem without any major investment costs: CoolFlex. This “Cold Aisle Containment” solution ensures that the cold air flowing through the raised floor is channeled directly to the equipment that needs it. It routes consistently cold air to all of the installed servers across the entire rack height. This containment means that the usual “heat nest” on the data center ceiling no longer has any effect on the room; hot air swirls in particular are no longer possible. The cooling efficiency therefore improves significantly with the logical result that the use of cold air can be significantly reduced. Dr. Koch explains: “With CoolFlex a data center requires far less air with less pressure, and consequently achieves more cooling power with a higher cooling air temperature.”   He also points out that modern servers can easily handle up to 28° C. But what do companies that already have a data center or a server room do? This Knürr solution is also an optimal match for such situations, because it can be easily fitted into the existing data center at no extra time or cost input.

CO2 reduction – the real McCoy!
Long before the competition jumped on the “green train,” Knürr AG was offering system solutions that help to visibly reduce power consumption and CO² emissions. In line with this philosophy, the Arnstorf data center specialist recently began to provide its products complete with the new ECOSYSTEM label. ECOSYSTEM stands for the ideal interaction of “economical” and “ecological with system,” and distinctly pushes customer benefits to the fore in this respect. In short, with CoolFlex, Knürr, an industry IT expert, provides a power supply and thermal management solution that is perfectly adapted to specific requirements. Using this solution ensures that existing data centers achieve increased availability, which can be both very easily measured and monetarily assessed.
