| Knürr equips super computer in Shanghai with cooling systems |

 The tenth fastest high performance computer in the world will be operated environmentally friendly
Energy-saving solutions have never been in such big demand in the IT industry. On this basis Knürr AG recently reeled in a big contract, which demanded particularly special know-how in cooling system matters. The experts from Arnstorf equipped the “Shanghai Supercomputer,” which is the fastest high performance computer outside the USA and ranked number ten in the world, with Knürr CoolTherm and Knürr CoolTrans systems.
The starting shot for the project was fired at the DataCenter Dynamics Conference 2007 in Shanghai, where Emerson China presented the Knürr CoolTherm product. The go-ahead for the project followed not long after. 42 Knürr CoolTherm and 10 Knürr CoolTrans systems were ordered for the “Dawning 5000A” high performance computer in the Shanghai Supercomputer Center. It was especially important for the respective responsible people that the cooling solutions in the data center be energy-saving. The water cooling systems that Knürr implemented were therefore the optimum choice. The best possible temperature is guaranteed at all times with Knürr CoolTherm, which sets critical standards when it comes to economicality and energy efficiency. A well harmonized ventilation and cooling system must be provided in order to make the IT area as ecological as possible. Knürr’s liquid-cooled server racks meet these requirements, as they work with a cooling water circuit and server rack-internal air circulation. The heat is not given off as a burden on to the IT room and optimum conditions are also created inside the rack.
All requirements were also met with the Knürr CoolTrans. The data center was equipped with closed server racks, which are fitted with a water-cooled circulation air cooling system. The solution is based on the fail-safe connection to the building’s cold water system, where a high performance water-water heat exchanger connects the building’s primary cold water circuit with the secondary circuit in the data center in order to regulate the temperature. The results achieved with Knürr’s solutions pay off in both financial and ecological terms.
The equipping with CoolTherm and CoolTrans now makes the super computer, which is also called the “Magic Cube,” future-proof with regard to environmental compatibility and cost savings. With 100 trillion calculations a second, the super computer, frequently referred to as the data center of the city of Shanghai, is one of the biggest of its kind. The industry and Shanghai University therefore now have a computer at their disposal, which covers every possible requirement. Fields such as meteorology, environmental protection, the automotive industry and scientific institutions are also served by the super computer. |
