Prime Minister Wen Jiabao visits CoolLoop installation in Tianjin
The Dawning 6000 Chinese super computer developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Dawning Information Industry Co. Ltd. was recently equipped cooling systems manufactured by Knürr AG based in Arnstorf, Bavaria/Germany.
Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao availed of this opportunity to travel to Tianjin, birthplace of the new super computer, whose predecessor, the Dawning 5000A, debuted in 2008 as number 11 on the biannually updated list of the fastest computers in the world. Official sources say the Dawning 6000 will be ready mid-year, and will go into operation before the end of the year.
With the implementation of its modular cooling unit, the CoolLoop, Knürr also made a valuable contribution to the new super computer’s highly efficient and energy-saving cooling system. With a performance of more than 100 trillion calculations per second, the new super computer not only opens up new worlds of computing – it also generates very specific efficient cooling requirements. With CoolLoop the Knürr experts have integrated the world’s first server cooling solution, which can be operated as both an open and a closed system, into the Chinese high performance computer. Quite easily and as required, the operators can regulate whether the cooling power is to be given off directly, or whether it should supplement the data center’s cooling. An elaborate flaps system ensures here that the right cooling power is provided at all times. But the Knürr cooling systems’ technical features not only help to make the Dawning 6000 Super Computer unbeatably fast – they also make it energy-efficient. The Knürr CoolLoop is a water-cooled rack unit for intelligent side installation on one or more server racks. The solution is a closed system with warm air intake from the rear and cool air expulsion at the front – both vertically over the entire rack height. The modular setup and equipping with one to four fan units allow the cooling to adjust to the Tianjin data center’s actual requirements, and selection with 10-30 kW per unit. An n+1 redundancy of the fans permits absolutely no compromises with regard to the Chinese super computer’s availability, reliability and security. Two cooling units can also be positioned on one server rack for the highest possible demands. The complete 2n redundancy of the server rack cooling is therefore ensured. The relatively high cold water prerun temperature also contributes to additional security and optimum server cooling; it is resource-friendly and sustainably reduces energy consumption. China’s new super computer will now fully and completely meet all future-oriented energy efficiency, availability and security requirements with the Knürr cooling experts’ solutions.
